General information
De Vrije Academie Werkplaats voor Beeldende Kunsten in The Hague, the Netherlands is an independent art institute. Its main focus is on the artistic development of young, talented artists, both from the Netherlands and abroad.
Work Space Participant
The communal work spaces are the beating heart of the Vrije Academie. There are special work spaces for drawing and painting, graphic art (etching, lithography, silkscreen, digital printing), ceramics and for wood- and metalwork. Although the Vrije Academie is not an educational institution, participants can receive regular tuition from professional artists. The workshops are run by technical assistants. The academy has a well-stocked library at the disposal of all participants. We welcome beginning, highly motivated artists and offer them artistic guidance as well as some theoretical background.
Becoming a Vrije Academie participant is possible after the positive outcome of an interview during which candidates must submit work to be assessed. The Vrije Academie does not impose a strict age limit. Neither a degree in the arts, nor professional experience are required.
Post-academic studios
From September 2007 the Vrije Academie has been host to DNA (De Nieuwe Academie), a post-academic department geared towards the artist's professional practice. During a two-year working period the academy wants to give highly talented, starting artists the opportunity to deepen and develop their artistic work and to introduce them to all aspects of the professional art world. DNA participants get their own studios to work in (during Vrije Academie opening hours) and receive tuition from renowned artists, curators and art critics. These professionals pay weekly visits to the individual studios and organize lectures, presentations and excursions. DNA's main goals are to stimulate critical introspection and artistic independence. Therefore the emphasis lies on critical counseling and introducing the participants to art institutions and their representatives.
Becoming a DNA participant is possible only after the positive outcome of an interview during which the artistic quality of the candidates work, their professional attitude, mentality and involvement are assessed. Most DNA participants already have a degree in the arts. However, this is not a strict requirement.
Artist-in-residence programme
Vrije Academie has an 'artist-in-residence programme'. Artists interested in this programme may apply.
